The Oscar-winning director of "The Silence of the Lambs" has been interested in Haiti since the mid-1980s, when he lived around the corner from a Haitian art gallery. He has been collecting Haitian art ever since.
The 35 paintings by 14 self-taught artists evoke the everyday lives of Haiti's farmers, fishermen and lumberjacks. Many images portray the rugged beauty of the lush, mountainous island.

Such ideas may seem a far cry from the current reality characterized by continuing political and economic crises in the Caribbean nation. But Michael Kuehn, representative of the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) in Haiti and director of the country program of the LWF Department for World Service (DWS), says coffee production is improving and on the way to restoring some self-confidence and economic recovery to Haiti.
